Tale of Tales as a game company, was begun as a studio not too long after it's founders, Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn met on an online artist collective in 1999 called hell.com. The two sought out to use video games as an artistic medium to make meaningful, creative projects for players to experience.

The games they created together were pieces focused more on its characters, atmosphere, and stories rather than how they functioned like a game as a whole. In an an interview, Auriea even mentioned, " Messing with players’ expectations is really only a secondary concern".

The two were move focused on how they could take a typical video game, and remove, bend and change conventions that players are used to, to create something completely unique. This however usually upset players, as many have set expectations to be entertained and satisfied in a certain way by the games they purchase.

Tale of Tales wasn't likely to succeed in the gaming industry from the get go, as their artistic processes came first, and players, advertisement, and captivating gameplay came second. As a consequence of this, their games eventually didn't sell enough to support their bigger projects any longer.

The two announced they wanted to stop making games commercially in 2015, and from that point on wanted to focus on creating games solely as art projects for whoever wants to support their work.
